Bio: Thelma A. Hertenstein, 94, of Morton passed away at 8:43 p.m. Monday, Sept. 23, 2013, at Amy's Country Manor in Pekin.She was born July 13, 1919, in Groveland Township in Tazewell County to Aaron and Tina (Shanbeck) Birky. She married Warren S. Hertenstein on July 25, 1940, in Palmyra, Mo. He preceded her in death, on Dec. 27, 1968. She also was preceded in death by one son, David Hertenstein; one daughter, Carol Frank; and one brother, Lyle Birky. Surviving are one daughter, Judi Swager of Morton; six grandchildren, Mike (Jane) Hertenstein of Chicago, Ill., Susan (John) Reese of Galesburg, Ill., Kevin (Kathryn) Frank of Lindsay, Ontario, Canada, Tony (Lisa) Frank of Naperville, Ill., Mark Vogelsang of Albuquerque, N.M., and Jason Vogelsang of Atlanta, Ga.; and six great-grandchildren, Grace Hertenstein, Warren, Graham and Renee Frank and Isaac and Caleb Frank.Thelma worked at the Tazewell Publishing Co. in Morton and later worked as a clerk for Caterpillar Inc. at the Morton Parts Distribution Center until her retirement. She was a member of Grace Church in Morton and the Caterpillar Retirees Club in East Peoria.Thelma was cherished by her family for her unfailing generous disposition even in adversity, a wry sense of humor, an abiding common sense and an unshakeable faith. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, 2013, at Knapp-Johnson Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Morton. Pastor Tim Bertsche and Thelma's two grandsons Mike Hertenstein and Tony Frank will officiate. Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. until time of services Friday at the funeral home.
