Louis was born July 5, 1925, to John and Eleanore (Hoffman) Leingang in Solen. He was raised and educated in Solen. In October 1943, Louis joined the U.S. Army. Serving in the 164 Infantry in the Southwest Pacific Theatre earned him three bronze battle stars for his service. Louis was honorably discharged on Aug. 5, 1946, due to an ailment suffered to his feet.
Louis spent his days caring for his 10 children and his nights fixing anything and everything you could think of. Washers, dryers, TVs, Louis could fix just about anything. It wasn’t an easy job, but Louis wouldn’t have changed it for anything. Later in life, Louis worked at the North Dakota State Capitol in custodial services, until his retirement.
Playing the harmonica from the age of 4, Louis continued to play even at the Ellsworth Care Center. His impressive collection includes one that emulates a freight train. Having a passion for all music, Louis also played the guitar. He never played any formal “gigs” but loved to play just the same.
Louis leaves behind his daughters, Sharon Heinrich, Deer Park, Wash., Bonnie (Randy) Horner, Renton, Wash., Patty (Scott) Adams, Mandan, Cindy Leingang, Stockton, Calif., and Colleen (Chauncy) Holm, Belfield; his sons, Larry (Bernadette), Mandan, Bryon, New Salem, Lonnie (Tina), Palmer, Alaska, and Jason (special friend, Angelica), Bismarck; his daughter-in-law, Karen DeRyke, Sioux Falls, S.D.; 29 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Frances Doll, Billings, Mont.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
