Leona Metzger (April 23, 1926 - March 29, 2008) Guest Book | Sign Guest Book | Send Private Condolences Leona Metzger VIEW LEONA’S TRIBUTE VIDEO Leona Metzger, 81, Eureka, SD, died Saturday, March 29, 2008 at the Avera Eureka Healthcare Center. Funeral services will be 10:30 am Wednesday, April 2, 2008 at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, Eureka, with Pastor Dianne Rood-Kiesz officiating. Organist will be Willis Kiesz and the congregation will sing “In the Garden”, “Amazing Grace”, and How great thou Art”. Ushers will be Cal Neuharth and Earl Gruebele. Leona Weisenburger, daughter of Thusnilda (Klaudt) and Emanuel Weisenburger, was born April 23, 1926 at Greenway, SD. She was raised on her families farm 14 miles N-NE of Eureka. She attended rural school and Eureka High School. Following her formal education, she worked on the farm and also as a hired girl for various families. She married Walter Bertsch at the Bertsch Station Baptist Church SW of Venturia, ND on March 17, 1946. They settled on the Bertsch farm 11 miles north of Eureka and later moved to Venturia where Walter worked as a welder. After living briefly in Sioux Falls, SD, they returned to the farm. Early 1967, they moved into Eureka where Leona cleaned for various places. She married Milbert Metzger December 26, 1970 in Eureka. In 1975, she took the Eureka School’s assistant cook job, retiring from that in December 1998 after 23 ½ years of service. Since May 23, 2007, Leona has lived at the Avera Eureka Healthcare Center. Leona was confirmed Lutheran and was a longtime member of St. Paul’s UCC. She served her church as a Confirmation Mentor, custodian, and historian. She also belonged to the Eureka VFW Auxiliary. Her hobbies included gardening, quilting, and she collected cups and saucers. Leona will be remembered as a great cook. Family members surviving Leona include 4 sons—Randy (Carol) Bertsch of Moorhead, MN, Carey (Cindy) Bertsch of Bozeman, MT, Craig Bertsch of Fargo, ND, and Michael Bertsch of Eueka; 2 Brothers-Ted (Idella) Weisenburger of Eureka and Lloyd (Shirley) Weisenburger of Lester Prairie, MN; 4 sisters—Lillian Morris of Fargo, Louisea Dockter of Ashley, ND, Ruth (Theophil) Teske of Billings, MT, and Gladys (Elmer) Geyer of Leonard, ND; and 2 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father on December 30, 1970, her mother on January 15, 1972, both husbands, 1 son (Dwight), 1 infant grandson, and 2 brothers (Nathaniel and Eugene). Casketbearers will be Tim Wittmayer of Edgeley, ND, Harold Wittmayer of West Fargo, ND, Kevin Wittmayer of Fredonia, ND, Bruce Weisenbuger of Eureka, and Earl Weisenburger and Steve Weisenburger of Aberdeen, SD. Lien Straub Funeral Chapel, Eureka, is in charge of arrangements.
