John E. Veerkamp, 82
John E. Veerkamp, 82 of Shelbyville and formerly of Greensburg, passed away on Friday, Feb. 26 at Major Hospital.
Veerkamp was born in Greensburg on Jan. 30, 1928 to parents Bernard Veerkamp and Anna (Hardebeck) Veerkamp. Both preceded him in death.
He married Rita M. (Wilmer) Veerkamp on Feb. 20, 1954. She survives. Other survivors include: daughters Susan (Steve) Veerkamp of Shelbyville, Mary Ann (Mark) Wentzel of Greenwood and Karen (Dennis) Crowe of Greensburg; and grandchildren John Crowe and Annie Wentzel. He was preceded in death by brothers Bernard and George Veerkamp.
He was self employed as a farmer and graduated from Burney High School in 1946. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and was a lifetime member of the DAV, a member of Shelby County Farm Bureau Co-op and the American Legion Post 70. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and served in the U.S. Army. John Veerkamp loved farming and raising livestock and spending time with his family and grandchildren.
Visitation is from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, March 1 at the Glenn E. George and Son Funeral Home in Shelbyville. Services will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 2 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church with Rev. Chris Craig officiating. A rosary service will be recited on Monday at 3:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Hospice of South Central Indiana or to the St. Joseph Organ Fund care of the funeral home. Graveside military rites will be conducted by local veterans organizations.
