Bio: The Daily Inter LakeThursday, December 28, 1967page oneLAKESIDE PIONEER, WALTER BROWN, DIESWalter C. Brown, 91, died in Kalispell Dec. 26. Mr. Brown was born June 8, 1876 in Monroe County, Ohio. He made his home in Ohio until he was about 24 years old when he went to the Indian territory in Oklahoma and engaged in the merchandising business until 1907 when he moved to Lakeside, coming up Flathead Lake by boat. He made his home in a cabin for the first year near the Frank Boylan place.After coming to Lakeside, Mr. Brown engaged in the construction business and constructed the Red School House in Lakeside for its first term of school in 1907.Following construction of the schoolhouse in Lakeside he was employed by G. H. Adams in the orchard business and construction of the water system in 1914 at Lakeside on the Adams property.In Feb. 1915 he was married to Rose M. Foster of Lincoln, Neb., and they continued to make their home in Lakeside until 1917 when they moved to Geraldine and entered the grocery business.During World War I he was employed by the Great Northern Railway in Great Falls. After the war he was employed by J. Neils Lumber Company in Libby but en route to Libby he stopped in Lakeside to visit the Adams family and settled there where he made his home the rest of his life and never went to Libby.After returning to Lakeside, Mr. Brown had been engaged in various activities until he built the Tamarack Inn south of Lakeside. While living at the Tamarack Inn in 1929 he was preceded in death by his wife, Rose. He continued to make his home there until 1933 when he returned to Lakeside and was engaged in fireplace construction work. In 1946 he was employed as caretaker for the G. H. Adams property for Dr. Hunter.Mr. Brown was a charter member of the Lakeside Community Chapel and was instrumental in building the church. He alone constructed the tall steeple and placed the hand-carved wooden ball on top of the steeple with his initials carved on the ball. He retired in 1962.In 1948 he was married to Alice F. Taylor who preceded him in death in 1961.Mr. Brown is surivived by one son, Foster Brown, Lakeside; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Anne Wolfer, Port Townsend, Wash.; and Mrs. Beverly Dodd, Astoria, Ore.Funeral services for Mr. Brown have been set for Saturday at 2 p.m., from the Waggener & Campbell Chapel with J. Torrance Harvey, pastor of Lakeside Community Chapel, officiating. Burial will follow in the Conrad Memorial Cemetery.
