Bud passed away Monday, Nov. 15, 2010, at Primrose Place in Aberdeen. Melvin Ernest Kopecky was born Jan. 7, 1926, to Ernest E. and Ida L. (Berreth) Kopecky in Highmore, S.D. Bud and his family lived on a farm 25 miles northeast of Highmore. In 1935, Bud's dad, mother, Bernie, Donna Jean and Davey were involved in a car-train accident. They were coming home from Miller and turned to go west to the farm. They turned to go home at Ree Heights. When they crossed the tracks, there were some box cars off to the side and they did not see the train coming from the other side of the tracks. The train hit their vehicle sideways and pushed it several feet. Bud's dad and Donna Jean died from the injuries they received from the accident. Bud, being the oldest in the family, felt a huge responsibility for his family after his father's passing. Bud helped farm the land with his family; however after a few years, Bud and the rest of his family moved to Miller, S.D. Bud went to school in Miller for a short time until the family moved to Aberdeen. He attended Lincoln, Simmons and Westport Schools. Bud graduated eighth grade in Westport. After various farming jobs in Westport and Highmore, Bud went to work for Mark and Billie Durfee, cutting meat and worked for room and board at the Namanny Caf?. Bud then started his own grocery store in Westport. Bud married Connie Miller June 25, 1950, in Aberdeen. They owned and operated the Westport Grocery Store for a short time. Bud then worked for Bud Tonner at the Piggly Wiggly Store in Aberdeen for several years. Bud and Connie later opened Dutch's Grocery Store in Aberdeen. They also opened a drive-in restaurant and catering service, which later was known as Pa's Tavern. In 1973, Bud and Connie moved to a farm near Mina and after a few years, they returned to the restaurant and catering business. They opened Dutch's on West Sixth Avenue, where he worked side by side with his wife Connie until the time of her death in December 2008. Bud enjoyed all the people that he met through his business and catering throughout the state. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing with all of his family and friends and dearly missed the number one hunter, fisherman and companion, Connie when she passed away. Bud was a resident of Primrose Assisted Living, where he entertained his 18 sisters and three brothers the past year. These people and the employees at Primrose were very special to Bud. He called them his extended family. Bud will be remembered for his kind heart and generous giving. He was a wonderful storyteller and had a keen sense of humor. Bud was a member of the Moose Lodge, Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Sertoma Club and the Hub City Riders Club. He was an avid Minnesota Twins Baseball fan, watching every game he could on TV. Surviving Bud are two brothers, Marvin (Vicki) Kopecky of Aberdeen and Donald (Judy) Brick of Aberdeen; two sisters, Darlene Hoon of Aberdeen and Sally (Joe) Elsperger of Bath; many cousins and several nieces and nephews. Bud was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Edward Brick; his wife, Connie; five brothers and one sister. Family prefers memorials to Northern Plains Hospice in lieu of flowers.
