Chet Cataldo, Officiating; Interment: Hensler Cemetery - Hensler, ND; Visitation: 12:30 PM - 2:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home. Alfred W. Bender was born February 2, 1922 at rural McClusky, ND the son of Philip & Emma (Schell) Bender. He was raised on the family farm and attended schools in Sheridan and McLean counties before moving with his parents to Oliver County in 1937. He completed the 8th Grade at Marysville rural school in 1938 and later helped with the family farming operation. Alfred married Esther Epperson on Dec. 17, 1943 at Mandan, ND. The couple farmed near Hensler, ND until 1955 and moved into the community of Hensler in 1958. He worked for Shamrock & Sons Construction Co. where he built churches for 12 years. Alfred was then employed as a custodian with Basin Electric Power Co. until his retirement in 1984. He enjoyed building horse drawn buggies and raised beautiful gardens. He also assisted his wife, Esther, with her Bismarck Tribune paper route. Esther passed away May 5, 2001. Alfred became a resident of the Garrison Memorial Hospital swing-bed unit in January 2006. He is survived by two sisters, Beatrice Keator of Bismarck, ND, & Agnes Krehlik of Dickinson, ND; one brother, Delton Bender of Bismarck, ND; & many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife (Esther), 1 sister (Faye Hershey), & 2 brothers (Bert & Ervin Bender).
