John G. Wetsch, 88, Mandan, died April 20, 2014, at Sanford Health, Mandan. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 25, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Shane Campbell as celebrant. Burial will be at Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, with a Knights of Columbus ritual/rosary at 7 p.m. and a parish vigil at 7:15 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the service on Friday.
John was born Sept. 22, 1925, to Martin and Bertha (Berger) Wetsch in the rural St. Anthony area. He was raised and educated in that area, until he moved with his parents to a farm in Fallon at the age of 18.
John married Rosemary Kuntz on Oct. 22, 1946, at Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Fallon. After a few years on the farm, John and Rosemary moved to Mandan, where they made their home and raised their family. John worked for Mobil Oil for many years and later Cass Clay before retiring.
John was a gentle man with great wisdom and compassion for others. He was always willing to help whenever needed being very committed to his community and church, but family was always central in his life and he was a devoted husband and father. John was a proud member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan Golden Age Services, Mandan Moose Club and an honorary life member in both third and fourth degree Knights of Columbus. John also had a great appreciation of all kinds of music and was a self-proclaimed history buff.
Those left to cherish his memories are his daughters, Nancy (Wayne) Kjar, Carpinteria, Calif., and Rosalie (Pat Kandziora) Wetsch, Madison, Wis.; his sons, David (Susan Burgess) Wetsch, Vancouver, Canada, and Alan (Mary Beth) Wetsch, Post Falls, Idaho; his grandchildren, Kerry Weissman, Sarah Pollichronakis, Chad Wetsch and Rachel Burgess Wetsch; his great-grandchildren, Connor Wetsch, Carson Wetsch and Miranda Lindsay; his sister, Eleanor (Mike) Wolbaum, Steele; and his sister-in-law, Jenny Wetsch, Rapid City, S.D.
John was preceded in death by his loving wife, Rosemary, who died April 14, 2009; his brother, Lawrence; and one great-grandson, Skyler Weissman.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Ruth Meiers Hospitality House in Bismarck or American Heart Association.
