Biography from "The Ancestors and Descendants of David BECKER 1829-1913" by Elaine (Becker) MORRISON:
DAVID BECKER was born 7 January 1829 in Kassel, Glueckstal, Odessa, South Russia and died 23 December 1913 on the Martin Gunsch farm 10½ miles northwest of Wishek, Logan, North Dakota. He married EVA KATHARINA HAUCK 16 January 1850 in Glueckstal, Odessa, South Russia. She was born 15 February 1833 in Kassel Parish, Glueckstal, Odessa, South Russia to JAKOB HAUCK and BARBARA KRAFT and died 18 January 1893 in Kassel Parish, Glueckstal, Odessa, South Russia. She was buried probably in the Kassel Cemetery.
David immigrated at age 72 on Crown Prinz Wilhelm via Bremen, Germany. The ship left Bremen 4 April 1902 and arrived in New York 29 April 1902. The passenger manifest indicates that he intended to go to Freeman, South Dakota to his brother-in-law GEORG DER (DOERR) but we have found no evidence that he got there. Family records of BILLIE (WILHELMINA) DOERR LARY indicate that GEORGE DOERR died in 1900, two years before David immigrated. Although none of David's children immigrated with him, on board the ship were others from Russia with familiar names: Eberhardt (son Daniel's wife was Katharina Eberhardt), Gunsch and Becker.
David declared his intention to become a citizen on 6 January, 1903. He applied for citizenship in Logan County, North Dakota on 17 January 1908 and again on 6 June 1908. His first petition was denied because one witness did not qualify. The birth dates of his children, as shown in both petitions for naturalization, appear to all be erroneous. On the application dated 6 June 1908 his wife's name is given as Elisabeth, also in error. He became an American citizen 7 September 1908 in Wishek, Logan County, North Dakota.
David Becker applied for a homestead on January 6, 1903. In 1905 he broke five acres and put in flax; in 1906 he broke seven acres more and had flax and wheat; in 1907 he had 13 acres in crop of wheat on land; in 1908 he had about fourteen acres broke, and had flax and wheat; in 1909 he had twenty five acres of wheat. The balance of land was wild, stony land. Other improvements consisted of a house (14 feet by 16 feet) worth $50.00 and an outdoor cellar worth $20.00.
The transfer of title was issued on 6th of June 1910 at Bismarck and gave the location as W½ of NE and the N½ of NW Sec 10, Twp 133N, Rge 72W. On the 13th of July 1911, David sold his homestead of 160 acres to his son-in-law, Martin Gunsch for $2,000.00. That land was adjacent to the Martin Gunsch homestead.
OBITUARY:
David Becker's obituary was published in the German language, and a shortened version in English, in the bilingual Wishek News, 2 January 1914. The following is a translation from the German text by Elaine Becker Morrison: On 23 December 1913, 9 P.M. Mr. David Becker died 4½ miles north of Wishek in Logan County following stroke and weakness of old age. The deceased was born 7 January 1829 in South Russia and there he was also baptized and confirmed. As a grown man he married Eva Katharina Hauck, who already on 18 January 1893 preceded him to eternity. He lived as a widower for almost 21 years. The above mentioned marriage produced 12 children: nine sons and three daughters; four sons and two daughters preceded the old father in death. In 1902 he traveled to America and came to Dakota where he took up a homestead. He spent the last years with his children Martin Gunsch and wife Eva, nee Becker. Surviving are six children, 39 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.
