The Holland Sentinel Friday, February 25, 1921 Ages Hunter and Trapper passes away JOCOB FLIEMAN dies Friday afternoon at Holland Hospital. Was widely known for his hunting lore; was 83 year old After an illness of about two weeks, Jacob Flieman, one of the best known men though out Western Michigan as a hunter and trapper, died Friday afternoon at one o'clock at Holland Hospital. He was 83 years old. Mr. Flieman was one of the best known men in this community. For many years he was looked upon as an authority in hunting and trapping lore. He spent most of his life in Holland and engaged in a wide variety of work, among other things having been a wagon maker and a blacksmith. But he was best known as a hunter. For many years he went to the north woods each autumn to shoot deer and it was his pride that he never came home without a deer. And when he did come home with a deer it was certain that he had shot it himself and not bought it. He made this trip regularly each year until he was about eighty. Recently in a public pulse article contributed to a Grand Rapids paper he said he expected to go to the north woods again next fall. During recent years he did a considerable business in muskrat flesh as a delicacy. He taught many reluctant persons in Holland to relish this delicacy as much as they do chicken. Flieman himself learned from the Indians to use muskrat as a food. Jacob's information was never engraved on his side of the marker.
