DAVENPORT Lester M. Johnson, 78, of Davenport, passed away from a courageous battle with leukemia on Tuesday, July 6, 2010, at Genesis Medical Center.
Funeral services and a Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Friday, July 9, 2010, at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Davenport, with Monsignor James Parizek and Rev. Tom Parlette officiating. Interment will be at Memorial Park in Davenport at the Veterans Memorial with taps and gun salute. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. today at the Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home. There will be a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. that all are invited to attend.
Lester was born on December 17, 1931, in Avon, South Dakota, a son of Edward and Elsie (Pudwill) Johnson. He was united in marriage to Ann Stepka on October 12, 1954, in Tyndall, South Dakota. Ann passed away on March 12 of this year. They shared over 55 years of marriage together. Mr. Johnson proudly served our country as a master sergeant in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the elite team of Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, Post Number 828 and the American Legion of Avon, South Dakota, Post Number 0150 for 56 years.
After farming in South Dakota with his father, he moved to Davenport in 1959. He owned and operated a Mobil Station located at Stewarts Five Points Service in Davenport. Lester gave his time and support to others generously. He helped others out no matter what time of day or night. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, neighbor, and friend. Lester was a skilled carpenter, farmer, plumber, welder, licensed electrician, and auto mechanic.
He loved to visit with friends and family on the deck. The coffee pot was always on. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, watching baseball, football or the history channel on TV, and playing cards. Les pitched a mean fastball within the farm league in South Dakota and always cheered for the underdog. He enjoyed playing the accordion, listening and dancing to polka and waltzes.
Lester was an usher and member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus 532, and Msgr. Leo J. Feeney Assembly 260, 3rd Degree.

Lester leaves behind his daughters, Vicky Johnson (Jean Wakem), Searsmont, Maine, and Lori (Michael) Black, Davenport; grandchildren, Ashley, James, and Anna Black of Davenport; brothers, Nilus Johnson, Mitchell, S.D., and Tim Johnson, ONeil, Neb.; sisters, Wilma Schnabel, Tripp, S.D., and Arlene Buchholz and Karen Sedivy, both of Vermillion, S.D.; and several nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends.
His loving wife, Ann, his parents and a sister, Mary Ridgeway, preceded Mr. Johnson in death. May they rest in peace.
