Mary Eva (Eckroth) Brady Hazzard Phillips 1926-2013
Mary Eva Eckroth was born July 20, 1926 in Mandan, Morton county, North Dakota to John Peter Eckroth, Sr. and Florentina "Flora" (Friedt) Eckroth.
Her father had been previously married, first to Elizabeth Westch and from this union, Mary had one half-brother, Martin Eckroth.
Mary's father was also previously married to Anna Westch, who had his first wife's sister. From this union, Mary had one half-sister, Monica Eckroth.
Her siblings from her parents union include; Phillip Eckroth, Franciska "Frances" Eckroth, Katherine Eckroth, Joseph Eckroth, John Peter Eckroth, Jr., Beatrice Eckroth, Margaret Eckroth and Hildegarde Eckroth.
Mary grew up on a 500 acre farm in Mandan, North Dakota. She attended school in a one-room school house. She completed her education to 8th grade, when she left school to work on her family's farm. Mary returned to school in her early 50s to earn her GED.
In 1946, Mary and her sister, Katherine moved to Yakima, Washington. Mary married and had one living child. After the death of her second husband, Mary married Freeman Phillips and the couple made their home in Joseph. A cowgirl at heart, Mary called Joseph an "old cowboy town."
Mary was a member of the Enterprise Baptist Church and she cherished her church family. She was an excellent cook and baker. She enjoyed traveling with her husband, reading, camping, flowers and gardening, and had a special place in her heart for birds and animals.
Mary loved her family and friends. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Steve Birge; stepdaughter and her husband, Ellen and Roy Mayhew; stepson Natt Phillips; and siblings Katherine Shanks, Margaret Paul, Joe Eckroth, Hilda Henry, Judy (and brother-in-law Glen) Thiel, Gary Eckroth and sister-in-law Marilyn Eckroth. She is also survived by many special friends and "grand-dog" Callie.
A memorial potluck will be held at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, at the Enterprise Baptist Church in Enterprise. At Mary's request, no formal service will be held.
