Joseph was raised in East Liberty - a section of Pittsburgh. He became a certified public accountant. He was married to Emma Matilda Kerner on October 25, 1899 at St. Augustine Church in Lawrenceville. They had three children (Irmanilda, Marie, and Elizabeth). When Emma was 42 yrs of age she died of pulmonary tuberculosis. Joseph married Margaret Lyons on November 29, 1922 and they had one child, Alice. Joseph and Margaret lived in Dormont until they moved to North Hills, a suburb of Pittsburgh. Joseph died on November 3, 1960 of peritonitis secondary to a perforated peptic ulcer.
