Mrs Freda Amelia Hercher Broedel
Birth: Sep. 3, 1890
Sycamore Valley
Monroe County
Ohio, USA
Death: Aug. 10, 1981
Marietta
Washington County
Ohio, USA
Daughter of Albert and Theresa Hercher.
Sister of Louisa, Charles, Edward, Albert, Jr., Clara, Lena, and Henry Hercher.
Married George Broedel on Dec. 25, 1912.
Mother of Clarice, Robert, Laura and Lloyd.
The 7th of eight children born in a log cabin, she and George moved from Sycamore Valley in 1915 to a farm in Reno, Ohio, where she resided for 66 years. Widowed at age 56, she carried on the German commitment to hard work, a trait undoubtedly instilled by her mother who was widowed at age 38 with seven children ranging from ages 9 months to 18 years still at home.
Every summer she grew an enormous garden, and what she didn't can, freeze, or give away, she sold. She kept one cow, "Bossie," for milk, baked her own bread, raised her own chickens, and also raised gladiolas that she sold to a local florist. In the summer, she gathered blackberries and apples from the pasture field and later, paw paws and hickory nuts from the woods. Nothing ever went to waste, and there was always something going on at her house! As well as being a gardener, she was also a great cook and seamstress and enjoyed quilting and playing canasta and pinochle. She devoted her life to her family and gave to others at every opportunity.
She was a member of St. Paul's Church of Christ (the German Evangelical "Kirche" built in 1842 with its prior name now restored to St. Paul's Evangelical) and Augusta Rebekah Lodge No. 272. She was also a member of Valley Farmers Club for many years in addition to being a loving grandmother to 9 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Died just 24 days before her 91st birthday.
