Marie S. Metcalf, 95, of Gnadenhutten, O., formerly of Uhrichsville, O., passed away on Saturday, August 22, 2009 at Beacon Pointe Rehabilitation Center in Uhrichsville, after complications from a fall.
Born March 8, 1914 in Woodsfield, O., she was a daughter of the late James A. and Nora Marie (Stoehr) Decker.
On May 25, 1933, Marie married William S. “Dobbin” Metcalf with whom she enjoyed over forty-four years of marriage until his passing on October 5, 1977. They were blessed with four daughters, Mrs. Dan (Jennie L.) McCue of Dennison, Sandra A. Metcalf of Uhrichsville, and Linda K. Metcalf and Martha Rataiczak who are deceased; two sons, William L. Metcalf and his wife, Nancy, of Mansfield and Herbert E. Metcalf who is deceased; seventeen grandchildren; many great grandchildren; and several great great grandchildren.
The eldest of ten children, Marie was preceded in death by a sister, Georgieann Decker, and five brothers, Wilbur, Elmer, Lewis, James and Homer Decker. She is survived by three sisters, Grace Kaiser of Pennsylvania, Iris Kerschbaumer of Uhrichsville and Mrs. Russell (Leah) Gold of Wooster, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Marie was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker who delighted in caring for her family and home. She was skilled in a variety of domestic arts and especially enjoyed quilting, crocheting, sewing and gardening. She also liked to do crossword puzzles. In addition to her duties at home, Marie was a substitute postal carrier at the Uhrichsville post office for twenty-five years.
She was a member of the Newport Ladies Aid for fifty years and was a life member of the Order of Eastern Star. In her younger years, she attended Newport United Methodist Church in Uhrichsville and Park Christian Church in Dennison.
Services for Marie, officiated by Rev. Harry Milligan, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 25, 2009 at the R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home in Dennison. Interment will follow beside her beloved husband in Longview Cemetery at Bowerston.
