  Charles' death caused a small controversy in Ironton. Charles was a German Reformed Church member and a Mason. His wife Paulina was Catholic, however. Religious conflict between Catholics and Protestants was common in that era, particularly in a small town among people of German ancestry. When Charles was comatose and dying, Paulina had Catholic last rites performed over him. She subsequently had a Catholic funeral service and buried him in the Catholic cemetery in Ironton. The Protestants and Masons were outraged at this act saying that he was a victim of his wife's religious zeal and that he had not ever been associated with the Catholic religion. The dispute between the German Reformed minister and the Catholic priest was recorded in the local newspaper. This article is included in the "Maps, Pictures and Documents" section. In a very unusual and overt act, the Masons removed Charles' body from the Catholic cemetery in the night and reburied him in Woodlawn Cemetery. His body resides there to this day.
