Vernon Herman Elting, the eldest son of Henry and Frieda Lueders Elting, was born July 14, 1920, near Carleton. He died at Bryan Memorial Hospital in Lincoln on Feb. 17, 1986, at the age of 65 years.
Vernon was baptized July 18, 1920 at Trinity Lutheran Church (Friedensau) at Hebron.
It was here that he attended grades 1-8 and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith.
On Oct. 24, 1943, he married Margaret Elizabeth Dunker at Trinity Lutheran Church (Friedensau) at Hebron and to this union six children were born.
For several years he farmed in the Carleton area, later moving to Bruning in 1961, where he was also engaged in farming. The last 10 years Vernon was an agricultural inspector for the state of Nebraska.
Vernon was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Bruning where he served many years on the church council and his last two years he served as chairman of the council. He worked with youth in various 4-H programs. Vernon was a fine craftsman in wood and lumber. He spent many hours carving and designing wood for many churches and homes in the area.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife Margaret of Bruning; three sons, Douglas and wife Nancy of Lincoln, Jeffrey and wife Patty of Hastings and Michael of Bruning; three daughters, Mrs. Richard (Nancy) Edzards of Lincoln, Mrs. Rolan (Connie) Bentjen of Albion and Mrs. Kent (Susan) Norder of Bruning; four brothers, Orville of Davenport, Glenn of Edgar, Leonard of Hebron and Dwayne of Carleton; three sisters, Mrs. Wilke (Edna) Hadden of Palo Alto CA, Mrs. Henry (Leona) Dunker of Burbank CA and Mrs. Lou (Florence) Muhar of Sterling CO and nine grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thurs. Feb. 20 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Bruning with Rev. Thomas Damrow officiating.
Music for the service was provided by Mrs. Wayne Langhorst who accompanied Howard Pohlmann.
Honorary casket bearers for the service were Frank Bruning, Eilert Wilhelms, Ernie Garrels, Eldon Reichert, Bernard Hinrichs, Kelly Bedford, Clifford Philippi, LaVerle Hopken, Lorin Bowman, Darreld Domeier and Darrell Messman.
Casket bearers were Kerwin Elting, Perry Elting, Scott Elting, Brad Elting, Kurtis Elting, Tracy Elting and Kelly Elting.
Interment was held at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Bruning.
Services conducted by Hacker Funeral Homes, Bruning and Hebron.
