Martin was born Nov. 29, 1916, in Oliver County, the son of Martin J. and Anna (Moser) Feist. He attended rural schools in Oliver County. He married Edna B. Fleckenstein-Mosbrucker on June 27, 1939, in Center. Martin has two daughters who adore him. He entered the U.S. Army in 1944 and served as a paratrooper in the Battle of the Bulge. During the war, he made 11 jumps behind enemy lines.
After discharge from the military in 1945, he lived in Glen Ullin where he worked for the railroad. Martin and Edna moved to Bismarck in 1948. He worked for Rausch Furniture for 28 years. He then worked for the Bismarck school system until 1982.
Both Martin and Edna enjoyed the outdoors together. Martin was one of the "good guys" of the world -- loving and very loved in return. He lived a pine box life but was solid oak.
He is survived by his wife, Edna; one daughter and son-in-law, Nicolette and Jerome Hoff, Mandan; four grandchildren, Michele Rohde, Melisa Hilsendeger, Nathan Hoff and Kristin Haug; five great-grandchildren, Mariah Rohde, Derek Hoff, Lauren Hug and Nicolette and Jeffrey Haug; one brother, Peter, Longview, Wash.; and one sister, Bertha Walsh, Bismarck.
