Birth: Feb. 27, 1921 Royalton Franklin County Illinois, USA Death: Jul. 9, 2008 Herrin Williamson County Illinois, USA Mary Emma Stephens: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice Southern Illinoisan (Carbondale, IL) - Friday, July 11, 2008 Deceased Name: Mary Emma Stephens ROYALTON - Mary Emma Stephens, 87, a lifelong resident of Royalton, passed away at 3:20 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, 2008, in Shawnee Christian Nursing Center in Herrin. Mary Emma was born Feb. 27, 1921, in Royalton, to Noah and Elizabeth (Eisenhauer) Stephens. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. Her parents; two sisters, Rita Kathryn (Stephens) Brannan and Esther Joyce Stephens; and a brother, Russel Thurmond Stephens, preceded her in death. All four of the Stephens children started their careers as teachers and three retired from the profession. Ms. Stephens was a lifelong teacher, beginning her career in 1938 at the Zeigler grade school. She received her Illinois State Teacher's License in 1941. She earned a Bachelor of Science in education from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 1948 and her master's degree from SIUC in 1964. She taught in many area schools including Royalton, Zeigler, Hurst, Herrin, Carbondale and John A. Logan. She remained an active teacher until her licensed expired in 1994. She was a member of the Illinois Education Association, the Delta Kappa Gamma Society and the National Education Association. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 12, 2008, in Miners Cemetery, east of Royalton, with Pastor James Heaney officiating. Family and friends are asked to gather at the cemetery before the services. Memorials may be made to John A. Logan College Foundation, 700 Logan College Drive, Carterville, IL 62918.
