- [S927] Obituary.
DAUENHAUER, Marie (McWaid)
Opportunity Washington suffered a huge loss this week when a local woman with a pioneering spirit and fiery red hair (pinkie) passed away August 29th. She will be remembered most for her willingness to help anyone in need, never wanting anything in return. Whenever there was sickness, sorrow or family emergencies, Marie was always there. Born in Yakima, WA on August 19th, 1921, she moved to the Spokane Valley in 1929 where she lived until her death. She loved The Valley and had so many family and friends throughout the area. Marie graduated from West Valley High School in 1939 and soon married Marcus A. Dauenhauer, the love of her life. They were married until his death in 1982. Soon after their wedding, Mark was called to fight in the Japanese Theater during World War II, where he distinguished himself with a Bronze Star for valor. Marie, part of the greatest generation, distinguished herself by staying in Spokane to work and raise their one son and sacrificed to do whatever she could to support the war effort. After the war, they lived a happy life near Pines and Sprague and raised a family of two sons and one daughter. Marie was an active woman. That's an understatement! She was active in PTA and received the prestigious Acorn Award, taught Sunday school at Opportunity Presbyterian Church, won a citation in 1953 for being a good neighbor, became a Cub Scout leader, was a VFW auxiliary member, also a dedicated Bloomsday and Junior Bloomsday volunteer, was a passionate gardener, was a well-known needlework expert, and always supported her grandchildren's activities. Mark and Marie were well known in the community as small business owners of the Opportunity Café in the 1950's and Mission and Pines Phillips 66 Service Station. Marie was also a retiree from Spokane Valley Savings & Loan. Recently she traveled to Olympia, WA for a large family reunion where her 85th birthday was celebrated by all. She was a proud, courageous, and wonderful woman whose spirit is still alive in her three children, five grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by her husband Marcus; survived by her children: Don Dauenhauer, Bob Dauenhauer and Kathy Lund; grandchildren: Scott Renz,Jenny Greer, Marlee Smith, Lisa Peters, Mandee Dauenhauer; great-grandchildren: Matt, Evan, Andrew, Tate, Noah, Tanner, Devin, Marcus, Georgia, and Berlin; brothers: Charles Hughes, Robert McWaid; sisters: Leona Hann (preceded in death), Carol Alameda, Mary Franklin; and many loving nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, September 5th, 2006 at Thornhill Valley Chapel, 1400 South Pines Rd, Spokane Valley, WA 99206.
