MILWAUKEE - Rev. Fr. Melvin Peter Breit, 74, passed away on Saturday, February 20, 2010, at Hospice Home of Hope in Fond du Lac surrounded by his family and close friends. Fr. Breit was born the son of Frank and Mathilda (nee: Lackas) Breit on November 29, 1935, in Knowles. Fr. Melvin was a graduate of Mayville High School. He attended St. Lawrence Seminary Mount Calvary from 1953 until 1956 and St. Francis Major Seminary from 1956 until 1958 and 1958 until his graduation in 1962. Fr. Melvin was ordained a Priest on May 26, 1962, in Milwaukee by Archbishop William E. Cousins. Fr. Melvin held many assignments, which included Assistant Pastor at St. Michael's Church, Milwaukee 1962 until 1966, Assistant Pastor at St. Therese Church, Milwaukee 1966 until 1967, Faculty member St. Catherine's High School, Racine 1967 until 1976, Associate Pastor Sacred Heart Parish, Racine January until June, 1976, Faculty member Thomas More High School, Milwaukee 1976 until 1982, Pastor at Sacred Heart Parish, Fond du Lac 1982 until 1988, Pastor St. John de Nepomuc Parish, Milwaukee 1988 until 1994, Administrator at St. Rita Parish and Holy Rosary Parish, Milwaukee 1994 until 1998, Administrator at St. Hedwig Parish, Milwaukee 1998 until 1999, Administrator at St. Philip Nere, Milwaukee 1999 until his retirement in June of 2003. In retirement, Fr. Melvin ministered in retirement facilities, Heritage Health Center and Harwood Place in Milwaukee. Fr. Melvin is survived by his sister, Mary Ann (John) Steffes; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and twin brother, Allen. A Funeral service will be held on Monday, March 1, 2010, at 1 p.m., at St. Andrew Catholic Church in LeRoy for a Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial with The Most Rev. Jerome E. Listecki presiding. Entombment will take place at Calvary Mausoleum in Fond du Lac. A visitation will be held on Sunday, February 28, 2010, from 2 until 6 p.m. at the Koepsell Funeral Home in Mayville and also on Monday from 12 noon until 1 p.m at the church. Memorials may be directed to St. Andrew's Catholic Church Restoration Fund and the Hospice Home of Hope in Fond du Lac.
