JOHN AND KATHARINA GEBHARDT

John Gebhardt was born on March 12, 1889 in South
Russia to Gottlieb and Anna Marie (Wiez) Gebhardt. He died November 3, 1975 at
Eureka, South Dakota.
John was one of eight children and came to the United States with his parents
in, about, 1902. They homesteaded in what is now McIntosh County in North
Dakota, and in 1915 the family moved to the Fallon, Montana area. As a young
man he returned to the Eureka area where he found work.
He married Katharina Oberlander, December 19, 1918 in Campbell County.
Katharina was born July 27, 1893 in South Russia to Fred and Christina (Brosze)
Oberlander and died December 13, 1974 in Eureka. She came to the United States
as a child with her parents. She had four brothers and five sisters. They were
Fred, Otto, Ernest and George Oberlander. The sisters were: Mrs. Christ
(Margaret) Grenz, Mrs. Jacob (Elizabeth) Bauman, Mrs. Jacob (Christina) Eckman,
Mrs. Jacob (Amelia) Heiser and Mrs. Adam (Carolina) Eberhardt. Katharina grew
up in Campbell County. After marrying John Gebhardt they farmed in the Eureka
area for thirty-one years. They retired in Eureka.
Four children were born to John and Katharina, they are:
Anna, born October 3, 1919, Eureka, South Dakota, married Edward Wanner and
lives in Eureka, Edward died April 2, 1984.
Martha, born September 6, 1920, Eureka, South Dakota, married Alfred Loehner
and lived in Seattle, Washington. She died on May 31, 1983.
Ella, born June 25, 1922, Eureka, South Dakota, married Herbert Schick and
lives in Eureka.
Ervin, born June 28, 1928, Eureka, South Dakota married Lillian Oster and
farmed in the Eureka area until 1965 when they moved to Eureka where he is
manager of the Eureka Equity Elevator.
The church affiliation of the Gebhardt family was Salem Lutheran in Leola and
Zion Lutheran in Eureka.
