Born in Menno, South Dakota, weighing two and a half pounds at birth, her mother used a shoe box as her cradle. Hilda came to grow and love and to be loved by many, one of ten children, she is survived only by her older sister, Adeline Neuharth, whom she lived with in the last years of her life. Hilda, fondly referred to by most as Grandma Mettler, moved to Bakersfield, California in 1936 with her husband, Eugene Mettler. Hilda and Eugene raised two children, Marlin Mettler of Pismo Beach and Dorothy Gibbons of Bakersfield. Grandchildren were one of Grandma Mettler's joys, and was thereby blessed by the Lord with five grandkids, eleven great-grandkids, and seven great-great-grandkids, all of who were able to experience her unselfish love. She never forgot a birthday, always had a hug waiting, was slow to anger, never complained, and was kind to all. Grandma Mettler's family and friends are left with a calm peace knowing she is surely in Heaven with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Published in the Bakersfield Californian on 10/21/2007.
