Barbara Froelich, 87, died May 6, 2011, at St. Gabriel?s, Bismarck. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 10, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Patrick Schumacher as celebrant. Burial will be at Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a parish rosary/vigil will begin at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before the service at the church on Tuesday.
Barbara was born Sept. 28, 1923, one of 11 children, born to George and Magdalena (Sattler) Vetter. She was raised in Shields and graduated from high school in Elgin. Barbara married John J. Froelich on Nov. 3, 1943, in Selfridge.
Barbara will be deeply missed by her family. She loved being a protective mother and grandmother with unconditional love for all. Very willing to share her time, she was a 4-H Leader with her children and grandchildren. In May 1984, John and Barbara, along with their seven children, accepted the Great American Family Award selected by the Sioux County Homemakers. This was for their active and steadfast involvement in 4-H.
Barbara was an avid cook with special treats such as kuchen and cheese buttons, her love for the garden prepared her for canning. She was talented with arts and crafts, specializing in the quillows she made. Christmas was a favorite holiday shown to all with her unique decorating. Watching baseball was a relaxing time for her along with being a NDSU Bison and UND Fighting Sioux fan. Her love for her husband of 49 years never went away, even after his passing in 1993.
Barbara will be deeply missed by two daughters, Kay (Bryan) Tischmak, Mandan, and Gayle (David) Froelich, Duluth, Minn.; five sons, Kelly (Renee), Selfridge, Kurt (Susan), Dickinson, Rodney (Kathryn), Selfridge, Terry (JoAnn), Woodstock, Ga., and Warren (Mary), Williston; 15 grandchildren, Shawn Froelich, Eric Froelich, Dustin Froelich, Joy Froelich, JoLynn Rising Son, Lance Froelich, Chase Froelich, Samantha Froelich, Kara Froelich, Jonathan Tischmak, Michael Tischmak, J.W. Froelich, Brooke Froelich, Timothy Marquard and Christopher Marquard; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Josephine Fries, Wisconsin, and Liz Wolfer, Spearfish, S.D.; and one brother, George Vetter, Bismarck.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two grandchildren, Mandy Jo Froelich and Matthew Tischmak; four sisters, Martha, Magdalena, Franciska and Helen; and three brothers, Conrad, Bernhart and John.
Memorials are preferred to the ND 4-H Foundation.
