Friedrich Bender, Sr Birth: Feb. 2, 1852 Velykokomarivka Odes'ka, Ukraine Death: Sep. 17, 1935 Menno Hutchinson County South Dakota, USA Bio by DG Bender; Friedrich BENDER born 2 February 1852 at Kassel, Glueckstal, Odessa, South Russia, was the son of Johann Philipp BENDER and Elisabetha KLOOTZ. Friedrich BENDER married Christina METTLER at Kassel, Glueckstal, Odessa, South Russia on the 15th of February 1873. Friedrich at the age of 22 and his bride Christina, immigrated to America via the Port of Hamburg, Germany aboard the SS "Silesia" and arrived at the Port of New York, New York on the 26th of May 1874. While on voyage their first child, Christina Silesia BENDER was born on the 21 May 1874. After landing in America they came by train to Yankton, South Dakota. There they purchased one horse, one cow and a wagon. The animals were used to pull the wagon and the cow was also needed for milk. They came a little farther north than present day Menno. They inverted the wagon and lived under it until their first mud house was erected. This union was blessed with 12 children namely Christina, Katherina, Jacob, Fred, John, Magdelena, Christian, Rosina, Martha, Emanuel, Carolina and Bertha. On the same location to which they had come in 1874, one mile north of the present day city of Menno they lived and farmed and raised their family to adulthood until their retirement to the town of Menno in 1915. Their youngest son Emanuel and his family occupied the farm until Emanuel's retirement. The farm has since been dismantled. Friedrich Bender Sr. passed away in his home at Menno on the 17 September 1935 at the age of 83 years.
