ohn William Theiss, 86, husband of Anna Marie Theiss, of Canton, OH left this world peacefully on May 24th, 2010. He was born July 10, 1923 in Canton, OH, the son of the late Michael and Katharina Theiss (Worner).
Mr. Theiss attended Lehman High School and McKinley High School in Canton, OH.
Mr. Theiss served in the United States Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater with the 383rd Anti Aircraft Artillery Battalion. He entered into service in Akron, OH, January 13th, 1943, and trained in Fort Bliss, TX. Battles and campaigns included New Guinea and Southern Philippines. Mr. Theiss was awarded 2 bronze stars in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and 1 bronze star in the Philippines. He received an honorable discharge on January, 12th, 1946, at Camp Atterbury, IN.
Following his service to his Country, Mr. Theiss obtained a two-year degree in aeronautical engineering. He then worked in railroad engineering at Timken Co. (Canton, OH) from 1948-1949, was a tool designer at E.W. Bliss (Canton, OH) from 1950-1963 and in product design for the Hoover Co. (N. Canton, OH) from 1963 until his retirement in 1986. After retirement Mr. Theiss worked part-time during the summers at Tam-O-Shanter Golf Club, Canton, OH for twenty years from 1987 ? 2007.
Mr. Theiss was an avid golfer and had 5 hole-in-ones during his career; he was also a pilot/aviator who loved to fly. John loved Big Band Music and was a member of the Elks. John and his wife Anna came to South Carolina in November of 2009, to be closer to their Grandson.
Mr. Theiss married his beloved wife of 53 years, Anna Marie Schwallie of Canton, OH in 1957. Other surviving relatives whom Mr. Theiss will be deeply missed by include Grandson, Casey J. Fish of Charleston, SC, Sister, Teddy Theiss Thomas of Canton, OH, Sister, Elizabeth (Betty) Theiss Haese of Arlington, VA, Sister, Francis (Fran) Theiss Shirk (husband Woody), Brother-In-Law Francis (Fritz) Schwallie of Canton, OH and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Theiss was predeceased by his Son, James R. Fish of Alliance, OH, Brother, Henry (Hank) Michael Theiss of Canton, OH, Sister, Esther Louise Theiss Clausse of Canton, OH and Sister, Dorothy (Dotty) Theiss Bundy of Canton, OH.
A Memorial Service followed by the rendering of Military Honors for Mr. Theiss will be held at Somerby of Mount Pleasant, 3100 Tradition Circle, Mount Pleasant, SC 29466 on June 25th at 1pm.
