Alder St. Mrs. Hawman was born April 26, 1913, in Seattle to Charles G. and Amy Watson Griffin. She moved to Pendleton as a child, attended area elementary schools and graduated from Pendleton High School. She married Arthur L. Hawman June 7, 1941 in Pendleton and they moved to Walla Walla. Her longtime wish was to attend college. After her children were grown, she attended Whitman College and graduated at the top of her class in 1972 with a literature degree. Mr. Hawman died in 1987. She excelled as a cook, loved to entertain and attend the theater and was an avid bridge player. She volunteered many hours at the Fort Walla Walla Museum gift shop and at Carnegie Art Center. She enjoyed being a wife, mother and grandmother. She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, the Walla Walla Woman's Reading Club, Lady Elks No. 287, Entre Nous Club and American Association of University Women. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, . . .; a son and daughter-in-law, C. . . ; two sisters, Pat Peltier of East Wenatchee and Nancy Griffin of Portland; a brother, Geoff Griffin of Pendleton; and three grandchildren.
