Sophia Steigleiter was born in Germany June 24, 1819. They were married in Germany and had a little girl there who fell in a kettle of applebutter and scalded to death. Sophia was weak and sickly so they decided to come to America. They were 40 days and 40 nights on a sailing vessel. They sailed into New York Harbor. All their belongings were in a home made chest measuring 31"w 21"h l8"d. The storage space was l l"h a 3" drawer on bottom and set on 4" legs. This is in the possession of a great-great- grand-daughter Vicky Luke. Once Johann und Sophia got to America their health changed. She got strong and he in turn got weak and sickly. He died at age 48. The story is she had a dog she dearly loved and a bad electrical storm came, the dog howled so she went to untie him and the lightning struck and killed her. She was 71 years old. Johann and Sophia had six children. The girl in Germany, John Jacob II, Pheobe, Phillipp, Margaret and Fred. Johann had a brother Phillipp and he and his wife Catherine came from Germany too. They settled on Long Engine, Monroe County, near Marr, Ohio. This was called the old Engine Henry Fliehman Farm later the Reuben Holiday Farm. One son Johann died at age 23. These five are buried in the Luthern cemetery buried in rows as they died, as was the custom then. This cemetery is on the road from Lebanon to Harriettsville, turn at the Catholic cemetery and the Herman Pabst Farm.
