He had been apparently as well as usual the preceding day, having attended Caduca exercises Thursday afternoon; and during the early evening hours he sat on the front porch of his home and talked with passing neighbors and friends. He retired at about his usual bedtime, with indications of being in usual health. Only a few moment before his death Mrs. Miller was awakened by his hard breathing and restlessness; but he breathed his last before medical aid could be called, and without being able to tell of his suffering. John Miller was a well known and highly respected citizen of Woodsfield, and was favorably known by many of the best citizens of this county, where he spent the greater part of his life in agricultural pursuits. He was born in Wheeling, W. Va., on October 12, 1842, and was 76 years, 9 months and 8 days old. He was married twice during the years of his well spent life, his first marriage being to Miss Barbara Weisend, who died December 25, 1901, and his last to Mrs. Josephine Kutzel, who survives him. To the first union eleven children were born, nine of whom are still living, and were present to pay a last tribute of respect to their beloved father, as follows: William J. Miller, Mrs. George Bott, Mrs. William Bott, and Mrs. Joseph Wahl, of Woodsfield; Mrs. Louisa Gallagher and George Miller, of near Coats Station; John E. Miller of Middletown; Charles Miller of Cuyahoga Falls; Jerome Miller of Martins Ferry. He also leaves one brother, Mr. Jacob Miller, a veteran of the Civil War, now in the Soldiers' Home at Sandusky, but who was present at the funeral. The remains were laid to rest in St. Sylvester's Catholic cemetery here Monday morning, after appropriate services conducted by Rev. Father Seeber, his pastor. The floral tributes were many and of the finest the season affords. The funeral was attended by a large number of people from Woodsfield and other parts of the county, also by the following from a distance; Mrs. Wilhelm, of Braddock, Pa., Mrs. Schulbach, of Youngstown; Mr. Hamling, of Donora, Pa.; Mrs. Steiner and son, of Geensburg, Pa.; Mrs. John Staudt, of Columbus; Joseph Weisend and wife and Mrs. Joseph Hepner, of Fulda, and John Weisend, of McKeesport, Pa. John Miller was a good husband, father and neighbor, ever true to his church, his country, and all with whom he came in contact-a man whose good words will long be remembered by many friends. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- John Miller, son of Joseph and Mary Hohman Miller, was born in Brooke County, WV, on Oct. 12, 1842. He had one brother Jacob and a sister Agnes (Nancy). The three were left as orphans at an early age and were raised by three different families. John came into Monroe County, met and married Barbara Weisent, a daughter of Michael and Barbara Becker Weisent. The Weisent family owned a farm in Section 3.3 of Malaga Township. The house is still standing at the intersection of township roads 55 and 57. John and Barbara were married in 1863 at Wheeling, WV. Their first child William was born there on September 6, 1864. After William was born, they came back to Monroe County bought and farmed land in Section 18 of Center Township. They sold this land and settled in Sections 1 and 31 of Adams Township. Between all the moves eight children were born. Agnes (Bott) Sept. 17, 1866, Elizabeth (Bott) Nov. 15, 1867. Louisa (Gallaher) Mar. 13, 1869, Josephine (Wahl) May 18, 1872, John Feb. 16, 1876, George Nov. 11, 1879, Charles Jan. 1, 1882 and Jerome July 18, 1884. The family home for many years was located at the bottom of "Miller Hill" on Sunfish Creek. The road where "Miller Hill" is located today is Monroe County 6. The Millers during 1880s moved to the top of the hill where they built a new home and barn. The barn is still standing. The farm is presently owned by the Fred Moore family. Fred bought it from Herman Gallaher, a grandson of John Miller, who farmed it for many years. The children of John and Barbara Miller married and settled in places throughout Ohio and other states. William married to Tillie Hines and settled in Kansas. Agnes married George Bott and lived in Woodsfield. Elizabeth married George's brother William and lived in Woodsfield. Louisa married Cyrus Gallaher and lived near the Miller farm. Josephine married Joseph Wahl and lived in Woodsfield and Akron. John married Melissa Phillips and settled in Middletown. George married Veronica Wahl and lived in Woodsfield and Martins Ferry. Charles married Victoria Wahl and lived in Martins Ferry and Arlington, VA. Jerome, my grandfather, married Mary Wahl and lived in Martins Ferry and St. Clairsville. The Wahls that the Millers married were all children of John and Barbara Letzelter Wahl. John and Barbara Miller left the "Miller Hill" area and moved to Woodsfield in the late 1890s to High Street. On December 15, 1901, Barbara died at the age of 58. She was buried in the cemetery at St. Sylvester's Church. John continued to live in Woodsfield. He remarried to Josephine Gutzsell on September 7, 1908, of Braddock, PA. She was a devoted wife and stepmother. On July 8, 1919, John died at his home. He was buried beside his wife at St. Sylvester's. Josephine G.
