Birkenhoerdt, near Bad Bergzabern, in the Rheinland- Pfalz area of Germany, is the ancestral home of Balthasar Seibert (b. 1 Feb 1816) and Margaretha Wegman Seibert (b. March 1816). They married 25 May 1846 in Birkenhoerdt. Elisabeth Seibert (later Huntley) was b. 13 November 1846. This information is known to us through matching the names and birth dates of family members with information from the Catholic Church in Birkenhoerdt, which information has been transcribed and entered into the computerized records of the LDS (Mormon) Church. These records and the family connections may be confirmed on line at www.FamilySearch.com According to the records of FamilySearch, Balthasar Seibert had 3 brothers and sisters: Jacob b. 20 March 1819; Elisabetha Catharina b. 3 Jan 1824; and Antonius b. 16 September 1826. Jacob may have married Anna Maria Emanuel, 17 Feb 1846; he is believed to have gone to the DuQuoin, IL area at an unknown date with wife and family. It is uncertain what became of the other brother and sister. The lack of information about the sister, and the fact that her name was assigned to Balthasar's first child, leads me to theorize she may have died as an infant. Margaretha Wegman was one of 10 children; much information is available at www.FamilySearch. com. The Balthasar Seibert family emigrated to the U. S. either in 1849 (probable) or 1850, to Rochester, NY. There is an entry on the 1850 census which may belong to them (names may be misspelled), along with a possible brother of Margaretha Wegman named Andrew (Andreas) Wegman. Elisabeth is the only child known to have been born in Germany; her baptismal record is available. Her sister Emma, born either in NY or possibly in Germany, died as an infant, and is said to be buried in New York. Katherine Seibert was born in Rochester, NY in 1852, and Mary Seibert in Illinois in c. 1858. The Seiberts moved from NY to IL some time between 1852 and 1858, and spent most of their time either in or around DuQuoin, IL or Belleville, IL. Much additional information about the Seiberts and Wegmans in Germany is available through www. FamilySearch. com, and additional information is known about the Huntleys and Seiberts from family sources. We hope to write a "complete report" of the lives, family connections and life stories about the German families and the Huntleys in Caruthersville, sometime in the next few months._________________________________ This document was prepared 4/11/2001 by Robert Donnell, son of Evelyn McDonald Donnell, daughter of Elizabeth Huntley. 3 - Information regarding the death of Margaret Wegman Seibert in Caruthersville, MO in 1890 or 1891, as per research carried out in 1974 by the "State Historical Society of Missouri", in Columbia, Missouri 65201, at my request. Following is the text of a letter sent to me by Mr. Winifred Stufflebam, of their Newspaper Library: June 27, 1974 Mr. Robert Donnell [my address at the time] Dear Mr. Donnell: I am afraid we have no 1890 or 1891 newspapers for Caruthersville or any other Pemiscot County towns, except for one publication which includes two months of 1891. This is the GAYOSO DEMOCRAT for Nov. 6, 1891-Dec. 25, 1891. The death of Casper [Balthasar] Seibert's wife apparently was sometime in 1890 or 1891 [based on the obituary, above, for Balthasar Seibert], so I read the available Gayoso paper issues since only two months of weekly papers were involved. However, I did not find any mention of the death. As I may have mentioned, we do lend newspaper microfilm on interlibrary loan but this would not help you since we don't have the papers in question. Our issues of the CARUTHERSVILLE DEMOCRAT begin with Feb. 19 of 1892 and go through October of that year. We have some indexes of cemetery records of Pemiscot County which I checked for the Seibert name. I found the tombstone inscription for Casper in the Little Prairie Cemetery (Caruthersville) listings: Casper Seibert 1814-1901 [the date 1814 must be an error; the date 1901 is correct, according to his obituary - see above] However, I did not find any other Seibert listing in the cemetery indexes so apparently he was not buried near his wife. Or it could be that her grave was not marked or that the inscription was too faded to read. I had hoped to get the exact death date from the tombstone inscription. It would not be possible to get a death record for her since official state records were not kept until 1910. Some counties kept their own records before 1910, but a survey of these county records shows that Pemiscot County death records are available for only the years 1883-1885. These are kept at the office of the clerk at Caruthersville.I am sorry I could not help this time, but I hope you will let me know if you have any further inquiries. Sincerely, [signature: Winifred Stufflebam] Mrs. Winifred Stufflebam Newspaper Library
