BIOGRAPHY: I am seeking the birthplace and ancestry of my great-grandmother, Barbara Röslein or Rößlein, who emigrated to the United States in 1869, arriving at the port of New York on the steamship "Hansa" on 30 August 1869. This ship sailed from the port of Bremen, in Germany. On the arrival passenger list, she is shown as age 20, "belonging to the country of" Oberfranken. The next entry on the passenger list is "Conr." Betz, age 18, also from Oberfranken. As seen below, a Betz couple became godparents of her daughter Anna in 1878, suggesting to me that there may have been a family connection to the Betzes. Barbara first married Balthasar Stegmann about 1870 or 1871. He apparently died around 1876. She then married Jakob Cyriac Geenen around 1877. I have not been able to find either of these marriage records. There were two children from each marriage, and all were baptized at Most Holy Trinity Church in Brooklyn, Kings Co., NY. These were Margaret Stegmann (godmother was Margaret Roslein [see below]), Adam Stegmann (godparents Adam and Luise Biegen), Anna Maria Geenen (godparents Jno. and Anna Maria Betz) and Cyriac George Joseph Geenen (godparents Cyriac and Katherine Schreiner; Joseph Geenen was my grandfather). The church does not have either of the marriage records. In the 1890's the Geenens moved from Brooklyn to Newark, New Jersey, and subsequently purchased property at 57 Lang Street. Barbara died in 1903 and Jakob in 1924. They are both buried in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Newark. The church from which Barbara was buried does not have death records from that period of time. Barbara's gravestone gives the dates of her birth and death [25 July 1847 - 1 March 1903]. I am assuming that the date of 25 July is correct. Her age given on the ship passenger list and on various census records make her up to a couple years younger or older. For example, if she was 20 years old on 30 August 1869 (from the passenger list), she would have been born in 1849, not 1847. The 1880 census for Brooklyn, NY, 1 June 1880, shows her as age 33, which would make her born in 1846. The 1900 Federal Census of Newark, NJ, gives her birth as July 1846. So I am not sure that the year of 1847 is correct. The 1880 census shows that she was born in "Bavaria", which is consistent with "Oberfranken". The 1900 census, death certificate, and children's records simply give her birthplace as "Germany". Balthasar Stegmann arrived in New York on the ship "Auguste" on 18 September 1865, age 25, from the port of Bremen. Margaretha "Rosslein" arrived in New York on the ship "Rhein" on 25 March 1872, also from the port of Bremen. The passenger listings only gave their place of origin as "Germany". Margaretha's age leads me to believe that she was probably Barbara's sister. I think that is about all of the information I have at this time. I would welcome any suggestions anyone may have in order to obtain the desired birth and ancestry information for my great-grandmother. Richard Richard W. Griffith rgriffithone@mediaone.net

My great grandfather Jakob Cyriac Geenen was born in Gossersweiler in 1851. He came to Brooklyn, NY, and married Barbara (Roslein) Stegmann about 1877. His parents were Johann Philip and Margaretha (Haberlach) Geenen. His siblings were Melchior, who died in Gossersweiler 1884; Magdalena, who married Jakob Volker; Catherina, who married George Schumacher; Anna Maria, who married a Hoffman; Simon; Andreas: and Peter. Johann, the father was born in Gossersweiler in 1820 and died there in 1865. All of the other children and the mother (Margaretha) came to America and lived in Brooklyn. Johann Philip's parents were Joseph and Franziska (Cunz) Geenen. They lived in Gossersweiler, but were not born or married there. I am interested in where Joseph and Franziska came from. I am also interested in any information on the families of the above children. I would be happy to share any information that I have.

Jakob married Barbara Rösslein about 1877. Barbara was born on 25 Jul 1847 in Bayern; died on 1 Mar 1903 in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

I would like to get information on how to obtain copies of adoption records for the 1870s period. My great grandmother, Barbara Roslein, had two children, Margaretha and Adam, by her first husband Balthasar Stegmann. These two children were subsequently adopted by her second husband, Jacob Geenen, around 1876-1880. They lived on Humboldt Street in Brooklyn, Kings County. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am trying to determine the church in Brooklyn, Kings County, where my great-grandmother was married. Her name was Barbara Roeslein. She married, first, Balthasar Stegmann, ca. 1870-1872. He apparently died, and she married, second, Jacob Cyriac Geenen, ca 1876-1877. They lived at or near 248 Humboldt Street during this time. There were two children from each marriage, and all were baptized at Most Holy Trinity Church, Montrose, Ave. However, Most Holy Trinity does NOT have either marriage recorded. Is there another church in this area where a German immigrant couple might have been married? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
