    BIOGRAPHY:
    John Herman, who married Rottkamp granddaughter Anne Froehlich, also left the farm but for a related field. When he lost his New Hyde Park farm during the Depression, he got a job as a sales representative for a New Jersey fertilizer company. "His territory was Long Island, and he sold to all his relatives," recalls his daughter, Carol Ann Hintze. Today Hintze's 24-year-old son, Philip, is a sales representative on Long Island for another New Jersey company, pharmaceutical giant Merck. And although he knows the area only as subdivisions and strip malls, his territory - which runs from Syosset to New Hyde Park - was once dotted with Rottkamp farms, including his grandfather's.

    John married Anne Marie Dorothy Froehlich on 1 Mar 1916 in Elmont, Nassau County, New York, USA. Anne (daughter of George Froehlich and Caroline Rottkamp) was born on 3 Feb 1894 in Hempstead, Nassau County, New York, USA; died on 18 Sep 1980 in Floral Park, Nassau County, New York, USA; was buried in St. Boniface Cemetery, Elmont, Nassau County, New York, USA.     From 19 May 2002 e-mail;

    Thank you all for making yesterday a success. It was the collective effort that made it all happen.

    Let me share an observation about human nature.

    Six months ago while finishing my research on the Herman's hotel article, I asked 5 or 6 grandchildren of John Maximilian Herman (including a few who were there yesterday) whether Herman's remained open during Prohibition. The answers ranged from "Gee, I never heard anything about that" to "No, the building was vacant for 13 years with John M. living upstairs for the 1st 6". But all the responses were to the negative.

    I was concerned yesterday that I would get violent protests from the floor when I said it operated as a speakeasy. However, I had an irrefutable source. Florence Krummenacker Tauber and Edna Herman Froehlich were best friends there entire lives (Edna died in 1999). Florence and Edna were about 10 years old when prohibition started (1917)and 23 or 24 when it ended. Edna lived over the bar with her father until 1926 and Florence visited often daily. Florence also understood the bar business. When Prohibition ended, she and her husband opened a tavern on Central Ave which they ran for 25 years.

    After my talk, one of the grandchildren that denied knowledge of the operation during prohibition came up to me a told me that "the good whiskey was hidden in John M. 's daughters hat boxes in their rooms above the bar. They needed to have the real stuff on hand in case an important customer showed up. No one would think of searching a hat box".
